Extract a wisdom tooth in Zurich
Sooner or later, it will affect almost every (young) person – even in Zurich: a wisdom tooth needs to be taken out. Although this is not necessarily a joyful event, there is no reason to be afraid of the procedure.
Whilst the philosophy of modern dental medicine is to preserve teeth first and foremost, a tooth extraction cannot always be avoided. This especially applies to (at most four) wisdom teeth, which often do not have sufficient space in the rear jaw area. This presents difficulties that can manifest themselves in the form of pain, inflammatory processes, cysts and so on.
If such developments or similar ones can be foreseen in good time, the experts at the Zahnboutique in Zurich recommend that a wisdom tooth is extracted by the patient’s 25th birthday, since the risk of possible complications is low at that age. However, if symptoms have already occurred, fast action is required. In our practice in the Zahnboutique, we perform a careful and exact diagnosis using an X-ray image – Dr. med. dent. Madeleine Rainer will then initiate the necessary steps in agreement with the patient.
How is a wisdom tooth usually extracted?
Such a minimally invasive and microsurgical operation usually takes place entirely pain-free in the Zahnboutique in Zurich. For each tooth, two injections are given into the gum as a local anaesthetic for the surrounding dental area. For most patients, this is completely sufficient to experience the intervention, which usually lasts just 15 to 30 minutes, without any pain. Following the gentle extraction process, bear in mind that the “space” that is left in the mouth cavity as a result may still be painful or react sensitively for around three days. Specially designated painkillers can help with this, although these should never be taken for longer than is absolutely necessary.
What do I need to do once the wisdom tooth has been extracted?
Your Zahnboutique in Zurich will keep an eye on you after the intervention. A few days after the operation, you will be asked to come for an after-care appointment in our practice to check how the healing is progressing. It may be necessary to take out some stitches. You can help to support your own healing by following these recommended actions:
- Avoid sport for the first couple of days after the intervention and look after yourself.
- Don’t drink any alcohol.
- Don’t smoke.
- Where possible, eat soft foods that can be swallowed easily and don’t need much chewing.
- Cool the place where the wisdom tooth was removed from the outside by using an ice cube or a cooling pad.
- Rinse your mouth with camomile tea to avoid inflammation.
If you follow these tips, healing usually proceeds without any complications and you can soon return to your daily life. It is ideal if you obtain all of the necessary items (painkillers, cooling pad and soft foods) before your appointment so that you are well prepared for everything.
How much can I expect to pay if I have a wisdom tooth extracted?
Here in the Zahnboutique in Zurich, we will of course inform you before the treatment about the costs that you can expect when you have a wisdom tooth extracted. Naturally, there is a difference between a simple intervention and a more complicated operation under full anaesthetic. Basic insurance covers the costs of this only in special cases; however, if you have taken out supplementary dental insurance, this will apply at the agreed level.
